On Sunday September 14, saxophonist, composer, poet and visual artist, OLIVER LAKE turns 83 years of age. To celebrate, WHFR PRESENTS will feature the many works of Mr. Lake with a four-hour tribute.
Oliver Lake is most known for his brilliant work on the alto saxophone, but also works with soprano sax, flute, poetry and visual arts. His well documented career began as a member of the Black Artists Group (BAG) out of St. Louis, an organization similar to the AACM (Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians) out of Chicago, that incorporated music, dance, poetry and visual arts into their performances.
Oliver went on to record dozens of recordings as a leader, is a co-founder of the World Saxophone Quartet with David Murray, Julius Hemphill and Hamiet Bluiett and co-led the all-star group Trio 3 with bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Andrew Cyrille. While Mr. Lake no longer performs in concert on the saxophones, he continues to be active, performing his poetry along with jazz artists in concert, and continues his work with the visual arts.
Tune in on SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 14 from 3:00pm-7:00pm EDT for a four hour excursion into the music of one of the all-time greats, Oliver Lake. This special program can be heard locally (Dearborn/Detroit) on 89.3fm or worldwide at http://whfr.fm
