Tom will feature the CD "A Silent Comedy" which is the the latest release of influential and respected Avant-Garde guitarist Bill Frisell. This solo outing demonstrates Frisell's ability to create complex harmonies, bizarre voicing and other unique qualities of his music. Also featured will be music from the Stockholm Underground scene of 1967 and a tribute to Lou Reed as he turns 71 on Saturday, March 2nd. Mayor John B. O'Reilly gives the speech of the year about the city of Dearborn, and WHFR will be there, broadcasting it live over the air and webcasting, too (technology and weather permitting). Join Station Advisor Jay Korinek and WHFR News Director Dennis Rymarz for this annual event--and listen to our "New WHFR Journal," this Friday from 1-2 PM for reaction and commentary. NOTE: This event is open to the general public, but limited to the capacity of the City Hall auditorium; arrive early if you're considering this.

WHFR DJ James Grant and Urban Rock Radio Remembered, Wednesday, February 27, 2013, 10AM-Noon

James Grant, a WHFR DJ who had his own unique view of the music world, passed away a year ago. His show was called Urban Rock Radio, a mixture of rock, punk, blues, and other genres prominently featuring black artists. Join host DJ Phil Maq as he recalls and plays some of James' favorite music, Wednesday, February 27th, at 10 AM--the show's usual time slot, to remember him.

From the abolition of slavery to the Black Power movement, black unity has been considered a powerful method to achieve freedom and equality. But does black solidarity still make sense in a supposedly post-racial era? Or should we be moving past all racial identities and identity politics? And how should we think about racial solidarity versus class or gender solidarity? In celebration of Black History Month, John and Ken join forces with Tommie Shelby from Harvard University, author of We Who Are Dark: The Philosophical Foundations of Black Solidarity.

"Space is the Place" celebrates the 46th Anniversary of John Coltranes "Interstellar Space" on Friday 2/22/13 at 6pm

Please join host Tom Wilson as he brings you this rare duet recording of "Interstellar Space" with John Coltrane and drummer Rashied Ali recorded on February 22nd, 1967. This complex, brilliant and intense music is presented in its entirety, 46 years to the day of its landmark recording. This recording demonstrates the mastery of John Coltrane at his Avant Garde best, shortly before his untimely death. Also on the show, will be the music of pioneering "industrial" band, "Throbbing Gristle" as co-founding member, Genisis P. Orridge turns 63 years old.
