Special Program on "Spirits Rejoice" TUESDAY

French pianist, Yvonne Loriod, the wife of and interpreter of the music of modern classical composer Olivier Messaien, passed away on Monday May 17 at the age of 86.
Messaien felt that the sounds of birds provided 'imitation of the music of heaven, unclouded by human egotism". He and Yvonne would develop a great interest in the songs of birds and seek out their music. Works such as 'Catalogue d' Oiseaux (Bird Catalog) and Oiseuax Exotiques (Exotic Birds) became well known pieces by Messaien and Loriod. Their music and the theme of birds later influenced many artists in the jazz genre like Eric Dolphy and Peter Brotzmann. The music of Yvonne Loriod and the bird theme will take over the Spirits Rejoice program on Tuesday May 25 from 6-10pm in honor of Loriod's contribution to the advancement of modern music in the 20th century. Please feel free to tune in and take flight.
